Temporary Lake at Castor River

Temporary Lake at Castor River

Subject

Temporary Lake at Castor River

Description

This was a lake formed on Castor River when a dam was built in the early 30s. The dam was in the lower part of Amidon State Park. That's my mom and dad in a row boat about 1934.

The dam was built into rock on one end, and a dirt bank on the other. It only lasted about 1-2 years, until a flood washed around one end, the dirt bank end. The dam itself was a good solid concrete dam with a spill-way and all. It is still there even today, but it is hard to get to it. You can Google Map it, and zero in close enough to see it. It's close to 2 miles below the "pink rocks" and 2 miles above Hwy 72 to Cape. You have to hack your way through jungle to get to it, or float down the river. Provided by Jack Ward Skinner
